Fiercely purposed

F

You may have wondered why lifework or life purpose keeps showing up in these entries. Have I become a fierce workaholic who’s blind to other parts of life? Am I stuck on this one matter to the exclusion of others?  Could be….

Years ago, I regularly visited residents at a local assisted living facility. I saw a good share of these elderly folks tilted back in their recliners, napping in front of their televisions. Their purpose in life had come to that point, understandably so. In conversations, I learned that, no matter their previously significant roles or stations in life, there wasn’t much purpose that these good folks could name now. Some of them had given up on ever being useful again.

As long as possible, I want to delay that eventuality. Although napping might be a good thing, perpetually soaking up television programming probably isn’t. I remain insistent about these stewardship matters: My life is not my own; God invites me towards the greater good that’s possible; I still have useful assets and there are plenty of ways to remain mission-minded long into my later years.

I understand that “giving up” could become a reasonable option for any of us. It’s possible, too, that we essentially throw in the towel when we’re satisfied with being entertained at all times. Or when we’re distracted—away from our sense of mission—by anything that grabs our fancy or that’s pleasurable. We give up when we choose not to answer God’s invitation—God’s calling—to bring God’s will to bear on the world around us.

I hope that this story helps you understand why lifework and mission regularly pop up here. I also hope that you realize that you still have work to do on God’s behalf.

That you’re fiercely purposed….
