Next Avenue: A personal recommendation

N

I’ve been meaning to do this for awhile: Invite you to subscribe to a free online newsletter/journal especially written for older adults and their caregivers!  This one-of-a-kind resource can be found at www.nextavenue.org and it’s definitely worth clicking on, worth supporting financially, too. Let me tell you why….

In my experience, Next Avenue is probably the most helpful source of content devoted to elder care and well-being that I’ve come across in my years of blog-writing. An ongoing project of Twin Cities (Minnesota) Public Broadcasting, Next Avenue is able to find writers who can cover the full range of matters connected with living well as older adults. The topics are universally close-to-home—practical, insightful, sometimes even inspiring. These articles from the most recent edition are good examples:

How to Choose the Right Primary Care Provider

7 Steps for Widows and Widowers to Manage Their First Year Alone

Getting (Re)Schooled in Small Talk

The Hidden Danger of Self-Neglect in Older Adults

Want to Help a Caregiver? Volunteer Your Online Research Skills

The writing is reliably crisp, positive and approachable. Where factual matters are treated, the details are up-to-date—a sign of solid journalism—and well-sourced. When the article writers express their opinions, they write from the foundation of their personal experience or professional credentials. The tone of the writing is always framed by respect and hope. When spiritual matters are considered, they are tinged with the kind of wisdom that comes from deeply held beliefs.

Before you click on the link (www.nextavenue.org ), one more personal thought: Because of this journal I am reminded to see God’s blessings at this time in my life—a cherished gift.

I’ve always been heartened by what I read in Next Avenue. I hope you will be, too!
