What to do with an extra day

W

(As a present from yesteryears’ calendar wizards, you and I will get an entire extra day in this month. Today’s entry explores some possibilities for using this gift.)

February 29th is like a time-bank whose deposits we get to withdraw now—an entire day added to our lives! How might we think differently about Leap Day if we considered it as something like a bonus or added-value coupon good only for a limited time? How could we cherish each part of that day—from waking up (“Wow! More time for whatever!”) to the end of the day (“How great to have used this day well!”)

We might pack special qualities or experiences into this day—like a picnic basket of delightful possibilities to take along with us. Phone calls to long-lost friends; writing thank-you notes; preparing and sharing a special meal with loved ones; clearing up neglected priorities; heading outside to take in the wonders of the created world.

Another mindset: Giving of ourselves to others on this day. Our presence, attention, attachment and engagement might benefit people who we might otherwise neglect or short-change. We could take burdens off those whose lives are overloaded. (“Volunteering” is another way to describe this approach.)

One possibility that appeals to me: Spending some of the day in meditation or contemplation, taking stock of our life’s impact—a mini-sabbath or retreat that results in prayerful self-examination, gratitude or re-commitment.

We could also give this day over to once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Not necessarily “bucket-list” quality occurrences, these one-day-only events could be pure enjoyment shared with friends or family. Day trips, festivals, off-the-beaten-path restaurants, lectures/learning experiences or visits to unique settings.

Because February 29th will be a timed-gift from God, it makes sense to prepare for its use—its value—right now. As we get ready, we can thank God for the equally special gift of every other day in our life.

Here’s to a happy Leap Day!
