(What’s “Easter living” for those of us who are older? Something that might reinvigorate us, to keep us keeping on, to motivate us during these later years of life. Today one possibility….)
The basic Easter promise is new life, an assurance that death isn’t the final story. That’s comforting for those of us who are older, but what’s “new life” mean when the spring in our step has sprung, when we’re contending with creaky limbs and dulled senses, when life itself seems fragile?
The newness I need from Easter’s hope is more immediate. As I continue into elderhood, I’ve noticed that I’m not as active or energetic as I used to be. Some of this condition can be laid at the feet of normal aging processes. My lethargy might also be connected to the weighty semi-depression I’m carrying around like a spiritual sclerosis. (That burden comes thanks to the cruel political leaders who continue to mismanage our national well-being.) Or perhaps I’ve been afflicted with a psychological malady derived from too many hours sitting in this chair.
However the torpor arises or continues, it’s noticeable. My resolve to keep moving, to resist apathy or to live purposefully might be trickling away. Whole days can pass with nothing much to show for the time I’ve used up.
I don’t like living this way. I need some of Easter’s good news to reinvigorate my spirit and fill my bones and brain with energy.
Small group Bible Study is one place that happens for me. When we dig into Scripture, the timeless stories and teachings shine fresh light on what’s happening today. Animated questions, witness and testimony motivate our conversations. Bits of emotional energy kickstart each of our individual callings. We realize that each of us is known by others—appreciated and admired. We pray for each other. Gentle humor lubricates our souls.
“New life” is there each time we gather—a Gospel answer to our elderly prayers for life in God’s service.
Happy Easter!
