The weariness of wariness

T

Over about six years now, I’ve grown increasingly wary about elements of daily life that have shown themselves as potentially dangerous. The ascendancy of a treacherous autocrat started the process, continuing with his tumultuous years as presumed leader of the free world. A variety of near-thefts of my online identity added to my cautious spirit, as did several widespread hacks of enterprises holding my personal data. The deceit of cult-following haters and screamers has shaken my trust in humanity. I’ve watched, disbelieving, as dodgy edges of AI begin to threaten the verifiable truth of printed and visual media.

I feel justified in being wary, but also acknowledge that my guardedness could easily morph into something completely unhelpful. Something destructive.

To be honest, I’m just plain tired of being mistrustful. Tired of the effort it takes to discern truth. Tired of sleepless nights and mind-numbing news. Tired of the chaos that swirls into almost every crevice and eddy of my daily life. Tired of the ways I may be changing into someone who may have lost his better angels along the way.

I have the strong feeling that many of us are weary of what has transpired in our society over these years of an anger-infested ethos. It’s possible that hyper-caution has steadily eroded the intricate elements that comprise our well-being. Wariness weariness may have brought us to the point where we have accepted emotional fatigue as a normal part of life.

Still, hope survives and re-invigorates me. The light I see at the end of this tunnel—and  inside it, too—is brighter now than it was just a few weeks ago. Despite my ongoing vigilance, I still carry the fierce resolve to show kindness and mercy, and to be generous. Wary or weary, I continue to hope!

And you…?
