Numbering our days

N

(As this year’s calendar winds down, I hearken back to Psalm 90 , a lifelong favorite. One of its  thoughts has stayed with me all my life: “So teach us to number our days, that we might apply our hearts unto wisdom.” [KJV}  Today some thoughts about day-numbering.)

As I’ve grown older, I’ve often found myself “numbering my days.” For me, that means taking stock of how time is passing, perhaps with some sober reflection, but always with thanks—gratitude for an amazing collection of years being alive!  Although day-measurement usually depends on counting big numbers—decades, years, months—it occurs to me that I could also do that kind of calculating, but with different metrics. Finding and using standards or units of measurement that might more be more tangibly considered as reasons for continuing thanks. Some possibilities (with attendant musings)….

100 COFFEE FILTERS TO A BOX

One cup of glorious coffee for each of the next 100 days!

12 CALENDAR PHOTOGRAPHS PER YEAR

Each month, another one of the wonders of California’s Sierras greet my eyes, always reminding me of God’s awesome power.

LIFE EXTECTANCY

The standard average chart for people like me indicates 92 years. (With a statistically average deduction for my cancers, that comes to 46 years.) I may have outlived my average life expectancy!

INTEREST RATES PER ANNUM

As with so many things in life, even the smallest additions—about1% for savings accounts—add up over time. (And I don’t ever really “earn” interest….)

1.5 HOURS OF BIBLE STUDY

At the rate of 90 minutes per week of Bible conversation with really wise folks at my congregation, over the span of my remaining years I might be able to count more than 500 lifetime hours. High-quality time!

60 EYE VITAMINS PER BOTTLE

Two times a day for 30 days and my eyesight stays good. I can see clearly now…!

You and I can create other gratitude-inviting measurements of our days. We can learn from that numbering. We can apply what we learn. We can be wise.

Thanks be to God, whose grace is immeasurable…!
